Sergeant John Wholaver

John Wholaver was born in Pennsylvania in 1843.  With his parents, Jacob and Anna, he moved to Circleville, Ohio where John worked as a carpenter.  On March 11, 1862 Wholaver enlisted in the 61st Ohio, serving as a corporal in Company C.  On December 31, 1862 Wholaver was promoted to sergeant.  He was discharged on March 31, 1865.

Following the war, Wholaver returned to Circleville and in 1868 married Jane Morris.  John and Jane had three children.  John and Jane later moved to Columbus where their daughter lived with her husband and John helped manage one of his son-in-law’s groceries.  John Wholaver died on July 9, 1907 in Columbus and is buried in Circleville’s Forest Cemetery.
