February 27, 2021

Clement Baker was born in 1832 to John and Mary Baker.  He resided on his parents’ farm in Deer Creek Township, Pickaway County until March 6, 1862 when he enlisted in nearby Clarksburg in Ross County.  Serving as a private in Company A of the 61st, Baker was struck down by disease on the regiment’s first campaign and died on August 15, 1862 at Culpepper Courthouse, Virginia.  The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866 says that Baker was buried at Culpepper Courthouse.  His name is also included on the family’s monument at Mount Zion Old Baptist Cemetery in Clarksburg.
