Private Julian Gillman

May 30, 2021

Julian Gillman (sometimes also spelled Guilleman) was born in Switzerland around 1822.  Marrying in 1845, Gillman and his wife Henrietta later immigrated to the United States and settled in Allen County, Ohio.  There Gillman worked as a carpenter in Beaverdam.  Enlisting on March 26, 1862 in nearby Bluffton, Gillman served as private in Company B of the 61st.  Five months later he was captured at the Battle of Second Bull Run.  Receiving a parole, Gillman was sent to a camp at Annapolis, Maryland to wait until he was officially exchanged and could return to the regiment.  Suffering from diarrhea though, Gillman died at the parole camp on September 26, 1862.
