Private Henry Davis

Henry Davis was born October 11, 1826 near Raleigh, North Carolina.  After moving to Ohio Davis married Mary Summers in 1851.  They resided in Circleville where Henry worked as a carpenter.  On March 1, 1862 he enlisted in a company being raised by David Crouse and Davis served as a private in Company C of the 61st.  After mustering out in 1865 Davis resumed his carpentry in Circleville.  He died on April 8, 1890 in Circleville and was survived by his wife and three daughters.  Davis is buried in Circleville’s Forest Cemetery.

In February 1862 David Crouse and Henry Bending began recruiting for the 61st in Circleville, Ohio. They recruited more than fifty men from Circleville and surrounding Pickaway County into what would become Company C of the 61st. A number of these men are buried in Circleville’s Forest Cemetery.
